OBT Orientation On-Demand Articulate

CNIC announces its newest Ombudsman Program training tool – the OBT Orientation On-Demand Articulate. This self-directed, on-line training for newly appointed ombudsmen can be taken on one's own schedule and can be paused and started as time permits.

Command Leadership, senior leadership spouses and anyone who wants to learn more about the Ombudsman Program will benefit from taking the articulate. This interactive training covers the same basic material that is included in the OBT Orientation webinar. It is not meant to be a replacement for the full Ombudsman Basic Training (OBT) course, but will provide an overview in the interim between appointment and training.

All ombudsmen should make every effort to attend OBT within six weeks of appointment, whenever possible. For more information contact your FFSC Ombudsman Coordinator or CNIC’s Ombudsman Training Coordinator at (402) 614-0550.

Ombudsman Advanced Training

Ombudsman Basic Training is only the first step in the continued education of command ombudsmen. Per OPNAVINST 1750.1F, ombudsmen shall also attend Advanced Trainings offered through the Fleet and Family Support Centers. Some topics for Advanced Trainings will be selected based on the current command climate and emergent needs as identified or requested. Other topics are considered to be important for everyone so have been developed into a standardized format.

You don’t need to wait for your center to offer this training – please feel free to study the guides on your own. Your ombudsman coordinator or command POC should be able to answer questions you may have. Topics of standardized curriculums include:

Navy Safe Harbor Advanced Training
Navy Safe Harbor is the Navy’s lead organization for coordinating the non-medical care of wounded, ill and injured Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and their family members. The purpose of this module is to provide a basic understanding of Navy Safe Harbor. It is important for you as ombudsmen, to have the resource information for Navy Safe Harbor readily available in the event that you become aware of a family that may benefit from enrollment and the services provided by Safe Harbor.

FAP-SAPR Advanced Training for Ombudsmen
It is important to have a basic understanding of the Family Advocacy Program, its mission, goals and services to help you separate rumor and speculation from fact. This will help you make appropriate referrals, ensuring that your command families receive the services they need.

Caring for the Caregiver Advanced Training
Caregivers have a tendency to think of others before self, resulting in stress and burnout. Utilizing available resources can help develop the skills necessary to recognize and avoid situations that result in undue stress. Balancing work and family life, time management and managing stress and avoiding burnout will be discussed in this training.

Individual Augmentee (IA) Awareness (Revised October 2009)
The purpose of this training is to familiarize ombudsmen with the IA process in order to better support IA families from their command. Changes are constant, so please visit the Navy’s most authoritative source of IA information and updates, at www.ia.navy.mil, for the latest updates and information.
