SSN Removal From the CAC
The Office of Budget and Management has issued requirements for the protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). These requirements include direction to all Federal Agencies to eliminate, when feasible, their use of the Social Security Numbers (SSNs). The Department has developed the DoD SSN Reduction Plan (DTM 07-715), part of which will eliminate the use of visible SSNs on identification cards.
On November 5, 2010, the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (USD (P&R) ) signed a memorandum announcing the removal of printed SSNs on all DoD ID cards. By the end of May 2011 and beyond, all DoD ID cards issued will display a new number called the DoD Identification Number (also known as the EDI-PI). In addition to the DoD ID Number, individuals entitled to DoD benefits will also have a DoD Benefits Number printed on their card. The DoD Benefits Number will be used primarily, but not exclusively, in the delivery of medical benefits. ID cards will be re-issued consistent with normal card life cycle, upon expiration.
