Established in 1981, the Senior Enlisted Academy provides senior enlisted leaders education and training in communication skills, leadership and management, national security affairs, Navy programs and physical fitness. The curriculum is a six-week course of instruction, containing over 240 academic hours. The Senior Enlisted Academy is the Navy's only professional military education institute for our senior enlisted force. Tomich Hall, opened in 1989, serves as the educational site containing both academic spaces and living accommodations. With the throughput expansion in 2006 theSEA opened the Perry Hall Annex, which contains seven - state of the art - electronic classrooms and a learning resource center.
In 1995, the Chief of Naval Operations established the requirement that all prospective Command Master Chiefs and Chiefs of the Boat successfully complete this course prior to reporting for their first assignment. Starting January 2005, the SEA seated 65 students per class and convened for 6 weeks. The SEA further expanded to the Perry Hall Annex in 2006, increasing the student capacity to 112 per resident class. The Senior Enlisted Academy offers resident and non-resident classes. The resident class is 6 weeks long. The non-resident class is two weeks long. There have been 162 resident and 43 non-resident classes as of October 2011.
NOTE: Beginning June 2011, SEA staff will relocate from Tomich Hall to SIMS Hall (686 Cushing Rd, Coasters Harbor Island) for approximately 18 months due to renovation of Tomich Hall. Estimated return will be January 2013.
