Base Access

On Oct. 10, 2015, DoD implemented ID compliance guidelines outlined in DHS’s REAL ID Act of 2005, which mandated that visitors seeking access to military bases and almost all Federal facilities using their state-issued driver’s licenses or identification cards must present proper identification issued by REAL ID-compliant states or a state that has received an extension. Previously, those with any valid driver's license could use that form of ID as proof of identity when applying for a temporary access pass at base security’s visitor control (pass and ID) offices. However, on Jan. 10, 2015, five states-issued driver’s licenses identified by DHS as being non-compliant (Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico and Washington State) are no longer accepted for access to DoD and Federal installations.  In order to better inform visitors of these requirements, DHS and GSA have posters and handouts available to distribute at access control points and visitor control offices. These materials, and lists of compliant states and acceptable state driver’s licenses can be found and printed from the DHS website: http://www.dhs.gov/
