Eriko’s List Of Things To Do

Wednesday, 8 February 2012

Let’s see what’s happening in Sasebo this week!

We will talk about Valentine’s Day Japanese style and Umegae Sake Factory! Thank you for waiting, Ogawa-san!

Valentine’s Day in Japan

One very unique event in Japan is how we celebrate Valentine’s Day. The custom of Valentine’s Day was introduced from Europe and US. However, when it was introduced to Japan, it was modified by a chocolate company in Kobe. The company wanted to make use of special day and start a marketing idea with boys who send something nice to their loved ones. But most Japanese men thought it was nonsense to feed the fish they had already caught (give presents to their wives). The business didn’t go well at first. However, the company switched marketing techniques and started targeting girls. The catch was “Valentine’s Day is for lovers. It’s OK for girls to confess to their true loves on Valentines Day. Why don’t you send a sweet chocolate with your message?” It was a big success and welcome by shy Japanese girls. That was about 50 years ago. Since then, Valentine’s Day has turned into Chocolate-giving Day from girls to boys. Boys who got chocolates from girls felt obligated to return something nice to girls to show appreciation. Due a traditional Japanese “Gift Exchange” policy, the candy companies got another opportunity to increase their revenue on “White Day” on March 14th. These days, not only boys and girls exchange gifts but everyone exchanges gifts. This means, girls to girls, friends to friends and so on during Valentine’s Day. That explains why you see a lot of gifts sold in department stores, supermarkets, and even convenient stores with pink, red and white hearts. So, please feel free to give me gifts. Yeah, that’s what I wanted to say.

Hirado Castle Town Hina Doll Festival

Saturday, 11 February to Tuesday, 3 April

Hirado city on Route 204

Hina Dolls are a set of dolls placed on step shelves in gorgeous kimonos. It’s said they are representing a loyal wedding. Getting married to a fortunate gentleman like emperor (rich and gentle) was their Mr. Right for girls in ancient times. Since girls had less chance to become successful by themselves unless they find right partners at that time.

Hirado was the center of northern part of Nagasaki during the feudal era. Now the population of Sasebo city is 5 times bigger than Hirado city. But Sasebo was a small fishing village belonged to Hirado Domain. Hirado city has a longer history.

The stores in central Hirado city boast their aged and elaborate Hina dolls next to the goods and merchandise. I’m taking Hirado Examination on Sunday, 12 February. I’m going to visit those stores and report it next week. Please wish me good luck on the exam.

Please call Hirado Chamber of Commerce and Industry Women’s Group at 0950-22-3131 for more information.

Memorial Service for Dolls and Stuffed Animals

Japanese people think the aged dolls, music instruments, or even utensils get animated and have spirits. If we throw them away carelessly, they would be back in grudge against the owners. The monks send them to Pearly Gate by chanting sutras. This is the safe way to say good bye to your dolls. Please do not bring dolls in glass cases or Chinaware dolls. They can’t be cremated. They take used dolls and stuffed animals for service starting at 0900.
