Employment opportunities overseas are limited by comparison to stateside locations. Here at Naval Air Station Sigonella, available jobs are usually in the clerical and technical fields. The Human Resources Office offers employment opportunities in a variety of appropriated fund positions and the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Department offers employment opportunities in a variety of non-appropriated positions related to leisure activities, recreational services and child and youth programs.
The Navy Exchange offers employment in a wide variety of positions related to retail sales. Positions are also available in the Stephen Decatur School system and the U.S. Naval Hospital. There are also a few civilian contractors that hire in the area and many volunteer opportunities are available. Family members and spouses may contact several organizations when seeking employment, current job announcements or to file employment applications. Most personnel offices are located at NAS I, e.g., the Human Resources Office (HRO); the Navy Exchange Office; the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department; as well as other personnel offices. U.S. citizen spouses who accompany service members on orders are entitled to Military Spouse Preference (MSP) for positions for which they are qualified. Eligibility for spouse preference applies only if the marriage took place before the couple relocated to the new duty station overseas. Italian and European Community (EC) citizens are eligible for employment by the U.S. Armed Forces in Local National positions. Citizens from non-North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries cannot be hired into the U.S. civilian component, even if they are dependents of military members or civilian employees, even if the dependent has a U.S. work permit. This is because the NATO Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) limits the visiting U.S. Forces, civilian component to "nationals of any State which is not a Party to the North Atlantic Treaty.
