Navy Exchange

Background:

U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain officially opened its brand new 30,000 sq. ft. Navy Exchange in June 2006. The new Navy Exchange heralded a significant quality of life improvement for service members and Department of Defense civilians stationed in Bahrain.

The 188,000 square foot facility, known as the Freedom Souq or P911, houses the NEX; Morale, Welfare, and Recreation administrative offices, and customer services and food venues; a post office, a Navy Federal Credit Union all under one roof. NEX Bahrain provides its customers aboard NSA Bahrain with a variety of products and an assortment of food items.

NSA Bahrain has no Commissary, so the selection of food items offered may not be to the extent customers are accustomed to seeing in a regular Commissary or NEXMART. This is due to limitations in the size of the store. Food assortments are limited to what customers need most on base such as fresh produce, luncheon meats and cheeses, frozen foods, and a wide variety of dry grocery items.

Employment opportunities:

NEX Bahrain currently has no openings for locally residing U.S. military family members. However, through our NEX continuity of employment program, exemptions may be made to currently employed NEX associates in the U.S. who plan to join a spouse stationed in Bahrain. Employment may also be granted to U.S. citizens who are CONUS-hired NEX management positions.

It is our hope that a limited number of hourly paid positions will become available in the near future.

NEX Merchandise Assortment:

NEX Bahrain features two floors filled with merchandise. The top floor offers a variety of fragrances and cosmetics, handbags, clothing, shoes, luggage, local giftware, linens and bedding, jewelry, watches, sunglasses, home office, computers, home audio and video, televisions, cameras, CDs and DVDs.

The ground floor offers food, candy, tobacco items, stationary, hardware, health and beauty items, laundry and household cleaners, pet food, books and magazines, greeting cards, sporting goods, beer, soda, wine, spirits, snacks, automotive, and a full-service deli and fresh produce dept.

NEX Bahrain also offers a number of services including an ice cream shop, bicycle shop, cell phone shop, tailor shop, barber and beauty shops, self-serve laundry, dry cleaning service, rug Souq, nutrition shop, video rental, and a 24/7 mini-mart. The NEX Special Order program can also order car parts and tires for patrons.

Prior to the arrival of spouses and adult children, NEX Bahrain’s merchandise assortment had been primarily geared towards ship-based Sailors and unaccompanied military members. However, this will change as spouses and adult children arrive. NEX Bahrain currently carries ladies and juniors active wear, foundations and a limited missy assortment. NEX Bahrain plans to expand the assortment of its ladies wear in spring 2009.

Very affordable custom tailoring is one of the perks of living in Bahrain. The NEX on-base tailor can make anything you wish in the size, color and fabric you want at a fraction of ready-made clothing.

Customers who can’t find what they’re looking for at the NEX have the option of ordering merchandise from the All Services Exchange Mail Order Catalog. The catalog offers a wide selection of products at the same value price at the NEX and there’s no sales tax. The catalog can be found online at www.navy-nex.com. Surface shipping from the continental United States is free on all catalog orders.
