The Hickam Thrift Shop at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam has improved customer service and convenience with a new upgrade.
Previously they only accepted cash and checks for purchases, but with the new system, customers are able to check out much faster.
“The biggest change was we’ve added a credit/debit card system to the shop so the customers can use credit cards for the first time,” said Becky Adams, the thrift shop manager. “They’ve never had that before and it’s been a huge success. The customers really, really love it, so it’s working out great.”
Customers used to only be able to pay with check or cash and would sometimes have to leave to go get cash, or hold up the line by writing a check.
Sharon Work, Hickam Officers Spouses Club Thrift Shop coordinator, said they expect sales to increase by 25 percent with the new system. “We can now give customer service to more customers and expedite the line,” she said.
Adams is always looking for volunteers, and donations are always welcome and needed. This year they raised $84,000 toward scholarships and grants.
The thrift shop is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays as well as the second Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are closed on all federal and state holidays. Also, during inclement weather watches and warnings, call ahead.
