Housing Information

The Yokosuka Housing Office serves the more than 30,000 personnel who are living and working in Yokosuka.

More than 2,500 townhomes and high-rise apartments are available as family housing on the waterfront main base and in the nearby forested community of Ikego.

In addition to family housing, the office provides support for personnel living in the local economy through lease translations, contracting assistance, curating perspective properties, providing loaner appliances and assisting with utility related communications as necessary.

Location and Hours

The Yokosuka Housing Office is located next to the Navy Lodge on Yokosuka’s main base.

Eligibility for Family Housing

Permanently stationed personnel, attached to CFAY and tenant commands, with accompanied bona-fide family members are eligible for family housing. Bedroom requirements are based on the number of family members and ages of children.

Applying for Housing

All newly arriving service members must check-in with the housing office within 3 business days of arrival to Yokosuka. A housing brief is conducted daily, Monday through Friday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Service members can register for a housing brief when checking-in with the housing office.

To apply for housing, please bring the following documents to the office:

  • Housing Application (DD 1746)
  • Copy of PCS orders with command check-in stamp
  • Family Entry Approval (if traveling with family)

 

After the housing brief, personnel who desire to reside in government quarters will be provided a list of available homes. The assignment of government quarters is based on rank and bedroom requirements. Assignment of government quarters outside of rank and bedroom requirements is not permitted. A home must be selected from only the provided list by noon the next business day. If a selection isn’t made, the first available home will be assigned. If an appropriate home isn’t available, the housing applicant will be placed on a waiting list for government quarters and referred to off-base housing. When a home becomes available, housing will contact the applicant and begin the assignment process.

On-Base Housing

Yokosuka has two housing areas, the waterfront main base and Ikego. Each housing area has a combination of 3 and 4 bedroom townhouses and 3 bedroom high-rise apartments that are allocated for enlisted and officer ranks. Bringing large heavy furniture is not recommended as some on-base housing may not be configured to allow for larger furniture.

The Ikego housing area is located in the city of Zushi, which is approximately 4.5 miles from the main base in Yokosuka and serviced by local trains and buses. It is approximately a 20-minute drive or or 30-minute train or bike ride from Ikego to the main base.

Off-Base Housing

Currently, CFAY is allowing newly-arriving families the option to reside on or off-base. Personnel are provided all the information at the housing brief and are given 2 business days to decide if they want to reside on or off-base. Please note, this option may change without notice and is based on U.S. Forces, Japan government quarters occupancy rate requirements. This option only applies to newly-arriving families.

The housing office provides support to personnel seeking off-base housing and curates listings of available properties; the list is not all inclusive. The housing office is required to inspect all off-base homes every 3 years. The office provides lease translation and utility related communication assistance as needed. The variety of home styles available in Yokosuka (western, traditional Japanese and a hybrid of the two) vary in size and room arrangement, so bringing large heavy furniture is not recommended. The housing office provides loaner appliances like refrigerators, microwaves, washers and dryers and transformers as needed to eligible personnel living in rented homes off-base. Loaner appliances cannot be provided to personnel who own their own home in Japan and locally hired and contracted personnel.

The housing office also maintains a rental partnership program designed to assist service members and Department of Defense civilians and their families in easily locating off-base rental properties without security deposits, key money and agent fees. Listings of available partnership properties are provided upon arrival in Yokosuka.

Pets

Dogs are only permitted in townhomes and the first and second floor of high-rises. Cats are permitted in all homes. Residents are only authorized two pets in on-base housing. All pets must be registered with Yokosuka Veterinary Services Office, have up-to-date vaccinations and be microchipped for identification. All cats must be spayed or neutered in order to be allowed in on-base housing. Documentation from the veterinary office with proof of current vaccinations and spaying or neutering will be provided to the housing office prior to housing assignment. Caution: depending on the size or breed of a dog, off-base housing may be difficult to find.
