ASAN, Guam (May 16, 2018) – Joint Region Marianas, U.S. Naval Base Guam in coordination with Guam Homeland Security and the Office of Civil Defense, will participate in the Typhoon Pakyo 2018 Exercise May 17-24.
Guam’s unique location within the Pacific increases the island’s chance of receiving heavy weather such as tropical storms and typhoons. The annual exercise is designed to enhance readiness of military personnel to prepare and recover from typhoons as well as integrate and partner with the government of Guam and community’s emergency responders.
Joint Region Marianas, Guam Homeland Security and the Office of Civil Defense, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam and numerous military organizations participated in exercise planning meetings for the last year leading up to this exercise. The exercise is one more piece of the ongoing and larger concerted effort between Joint Region Marianas and the government of Guam to ensure the island and region are prepared for all potential hazards and emergency scenarios.
The public should not be alarmed if they see and hear increased activity at the bases associated with the exercise.
