During September, continental U.S. Navy CNIC MWR Fitness Centers will distribute coupons for healthy ingredients from DeCA vendors sold at commissaries onboard Navy installations.
“With nearly 90% of Americans falling below fruit and vegetable consumption recommendations, everyone can make a meaningful impact on their health,” said CNIC MWR Performance Enhancement Dietitian Joanne Villaflor, RD, CSSD. “Incorporating fruits and veggies into your meals doesn’t have to be difficult.”
DeCA offers healthy recipes at https://www.commissaries.com/recipes/all-recipes to help Navy families make delicious and healthy meals at home. Villaflor recommended additional strategies such as adding fruit to cereal, veggies to an omelet, making a fresh fruit smoothie, or eating fruits and veggies for a snack to increase the intake of these important foods.
“The Defense Commissary Agency is excited and honored to partner with CNIC in promoting the consumption of healthy fruits and vegetables,” said Marine Sgt. Maj. Michael R. Saucedo, senior enlisted advisor, Defense Commissary Agency. “We hope to build even more partnerships with other entities as we increase our outreach efforts to promote the commissary benefit and its resources to help our service members and their families improve their health and wellness.”
Take action by visiting your Navy MWR Fitness Center for health tips and weekly recipes while challenging fellow Sailors, family members and friends to consume more fruits and vegetables. Visit www.navyfitness.org for additional information on fitness and nutrition.
Villaflor also mentioned trying an unfamiliar fruit or vegetable at a local farmer’s market and sharing it on social media using the hashtags #NavyMWRFitness, #haveaplant, and #NFVM2021 to be part of the conversation.
