Commander Cappellini is a native of Old Forge, PA. He graduated from Wilkes University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, from there he went on to receive a Master of Science in Operations Research from the Naval Post Graduate School and Joint Military Professional Education from the Naval War College.
Prior to reporting to Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy as the Executive Officer, Commander Cappellini served in multiple operational, staff and analytic positions. Most recently he served as a Senior Analytic Advisor within the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Policy, Strategy and Force Development Analysis Directorate, responsible for the execution, oversight and development of OSD (P) sponsored analytic efforts as well as coordinating and participating in cross-departmental analytic activities.
Commander Cappellini served as the Navy staff’s Operations Research Commanding Officer as the OPNAV N81 Deputy for Campaign Analysis. Operationally he was trained as a Naval Helicopter pilot flying the SH-60B, and the MH-60R in both expeditionary and air wing squadrons. He has considerable operational expertise in Anti-Submarine Warfare, Anti-Surface Warfare, Strike Warfare and Search and Rescue. Additionally, Commander Cappellini was the CJTF-101 Night Aviation Battle Major/OIC in Bagram Afghanistan where he was the CJTF lead for all rotary wing aviation, quick reaction Force employment, personnel recovery, fallen angel, and air assault missions.
He has served as the Flag Aide, Commander Navy Region Southeast and has conducted multiple operational naval deployments to the EUCOM, CENTCOM and INDOPACOM areas of responsibility as well as an overseas Forward Deployed Naval Forces assignment to Naval Air Station Atsugi, Japan.
Commander Cappellini has been awarded two direct action Air Medals for his efforts flying humanitarian relief missions during Hurricanes Katrina / Rita and Super Typhoon Haiyan.
