Master Chief Barnes was born and raised in Kirkland, Washington. Immediately upon completion of high school he enlisted in the United States Navy, and, in December of 1995 he shipped off for recruit training at Great Lakes, Illinois. Follow on training included Naval Aircrewman Candidate School, AW “A” School, SERE School, and the P-3C Non-Acoustic Sensor Operator Fleet Replacement course at VP-30.
His first fleet assignment was with the Grey Knights of Patrol Squadron Forty-Six based and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. He deployed 5 times with VP-46 to such locations as Misawa, Japan; Kadena Airbase on Okinawa; Masirah, Oman; Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean; and the Kingdom of Bahrain. During these deployments he made numerous detachments to places such as South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Mauritius, Guam and Qatar. In 2005, Master Chief Barnes returned to RTC Great Lakes for duty as a Recruit Division Commander. During this tour he pushed 7 Recruit Divisions, instructed RDC “C” School, qualified as a Master Training Specialist, and was advanced to Chief Petty Officer. In 2008, he transferred overseas for a quick twelve month tour at Task Force 57 in Bahrain where he served as the Task Force Operations LCPO and was a qualified CTF-57 Battle Watch Captain. In 2009 he transferred back to Whidbey Island for duty with the Fighting Marlins of Patrol Squadron Forty. At VP-40 he served as the AWO Division LCPO and deployed once to the Seventh Fleet AOR. In 2012 he transferred to Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing Ten where he worked in the Weapons and Tactics Unit, qualified as a CTG 32.2 Task Group Watch Officer, and served as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader. During this tour he was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer. In 2014 he reported back to VP-46 where he served as Operations LCPO, deployed twice, once each to the Fifth and Seventh Fleet Areas of Responsibility, served as a detachment Senior Enlisted Leader and was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer. In March of 2018, he reported to his current assignment at Task Force 67 in Sigonella, Sicily, where he serves as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader.
Master Chief Barnes has flowed over 5,200 hours in P-3C aircraft. His personal awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6 awards, 1 with combat distinguishing “V” device), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (7 awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various unit awards and ribbons. He is a graduate of the U. S. Navy’s Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 172, Blue Group). He has been married to his wife Annett since 2006 and together they have one daughter, Scarlet Marie.
