Training

INTER-CULTURAL RELATIONS TRAINING

The FFSC continually provides myriad classes that are geared towards fostering Italian cultural sensitivity.  These programs include: 

 

  • ICR for Newcomers:  This three-day introductory course offers newly assigned military members and spouses practical information about Italian culture and language.  Completed in the first two weeks of arrival, this course concentrates on culture adaptation, culture shock, and survival skills, and is accentuated with a one-day field trip to Catania and half day to Motta S. Anastasia. (3 and a half days)

     
  • ICR brief for “Survive and Thrive” spouse orientation:  This one-day course assists family members’ assimilation into the overseas environment.  Topics include: culture adaptation and culture shock and expectations.  A short day trip to a local town highlights the course’s learning objectives. (1 day)

     
  • ICR for Teens:  This monthly half-day introductory course is tailored to teenagers (ages 12-19) who have recently arrived to Sigonella.  This course assists participants’ cross-cultural adjustment by fostering a better understanding of cultural norms and highlighting the differences and similarities between US and Italian cultures.  A half-day field trip to a local junior high school highlights the courses learning objectives.  (1/2 day)

     
  • ICR for Topolino:  This monthly half-day introductory course is tailored to school-aged children (ages 6-11) who have recently arrived in Sigonella.  The course assists participants in dealing with cross-cultural adjustment issues and includes a field trip to a local elementary school. (1/2 day)

 

Cultural Sensitivity

  • ICR in the workplace training:  This course is designed to help employees work effectively with others who have culturally diverse backgrounds.  This course emphasizes the establishment of quality interpersonal relationships among culturally diverse populations through effective communication.  (4 hrs.)

 

  • ICR approach to management training:  This course is tailored to managers and supervisors and is designed to help leaders motivate and understand employees who have culturally diverse backgrounds. A secondary goal is to help leadership understand the impact of significant cultural differences, within the work environment. (4 hrs.)

     
  • “Working in a multicultural environment” training:  This course is designed for newly hired local nationals in Sigonella. The objectives are to: raise culture awareness; increase knowledge about cultural differences and their impact in the working environment; enhance communication; introduce the Navy structure and introduce the American work and customer service perspective to newly hired local nationals. (4 hrs)

     
  • ICR for sponsors training: This monthly class is designed for sponsors to increase their sensitivity and understanding of our own cultural paradigms and how that might affect new arrivals to Sigonella. (30 minutes)
