No branches of U.S. banks are located off-base, however, a number of banking options are available to the service member and civilian employees.
Service members may easily maintain stateside accounts by utilizing the Direct Deposit System. Net pay will be electronically transferred on or before payday to your stateside bank.
Navy Federal Credit Union, located on NAS II offers full service banking, including two 24 hour Automatic Teller Machine tied into PLUS and Armed Forces Financial Network, for all active duty military personnel, civilians employed by Department of Defense, and their families. Clubs and associations of the above are also eligible for membership. Services include savings and interest-bearing checking accounts, certificate accounts, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA), consumer loans, a checking line of credit, traveler's checks, and a no-fee Visa card. Through the Automated Clearing House, NFCU offers guaranteed military Direct Deposit and Allotment service, and automatic processing of certain types of stateside mortgage and investment payments. NFCU also offers mortgages and home equity lines of credit on properties in many stateside locations.
You may cash checks and exchange currency at PSD Disbursing Office on NAS II and at the Navy Exchange on NAS I. You will also be able to use American Express, Diner's Club, Visa and MasterCard in Italy, but no gas credit cards. The Navy Exchange accepts NEXCARD, American Express, Discover, Master Card and Visa. You may also wish to maintain credit with major mail order companies.
Community Bank, operated by Bank of America, is contracted by the DoD to provide stateside-like banking services exclusively to the military community. This relationship benefits customers by ensuring a wide range of services tailored for the unique requirements of the servicemen and women stationed overseas. Community Bank is located on both NAS I and NAS II and has two ATM's on each base which dispenses both Dollars and Euro. Community Bank is the main source for currency exchange as well as paying local bills.
