Power of Attorney

A power of attorney may be useful or necessary, especially if the service member will be absent from home for extended periods of time. A power of attorney may be tailored and limited to fit your particular needs -- enabling the holder (usually the spouse or a trusted friend) to act on behalf of the member. General power’s of attorney are powerful documents and should only be used in limited circumstances. A judge advocate general can provide advice on whether to get a general or special power of attorney. In most cases, a special (or limited) power of attorney can be drafted to protect the maker yet authorize the holder to complete all required business. If you need a power of attorney before transferring, contact your local Legal Assistance Office. No appointment is needed to obtain a power of attorney in Sigonella. The U.S. Naval Legal Service Office (NLSO) provides powers of attorney on a walk-in basis between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

If you want your spouse to be able to cash checks at PSD Sigonella, to purchase euro for example, you will need to give your spouse a special power of attorney for that purpose. Those forms are available at the PSD. Finally, if you need a power of attorney for the sale or shipment of a vehicle registered through the "Allied Forces Italy" system, the Motor Vehicle Registration Office (MVRO) must complete the required initial paperwork before the power of attorney can be drafted.
