Cmdr. Canfield is a native of South Lake Tahoe, California and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He reported to NAS Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 2002.
His fleet assignments as a junior officer include flying the S-3B Viking with the "Diamondcutters" of VS-30 onboard USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) until the sundown of his squadron in December 2005. He then transitioned to the EA-6B Prowler and flew with the "Garudas" of VAQ-134 deploying from Bagram AFB, Afghanistan. His department head tour was with the "Rooks" of VAQ-137 onboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65). Recently, he served as the Air Operations Officer onboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69).
Ashore, he attended the Naval War College, graduating in 2010 with a Masters of Art degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and served as the Deputy Director, Strategic Programs for First Air Force, Air Forces Northern at Tyndall AFB, Florida.
Commander Canfield has accumulated more than 2,000 flight hours and 300 carrier landings. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Strike Flight Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal,
and various unit, campaign and service decorations.
