Captain Sandway is a native of Anchorage, Alaska. He received his commission from the Virginia Military Institute in 1990 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Biology. After initial officer training, his first tour was onboard the USS BLUE RIDGE where he was assigned as the Operations Department Division Officer and Main Propulsion Assistant. He transferred in 1994.

    Between 1994 and 1996 Captain Sandway was assigned to Assault Craft Unit Five, in Camp Pendleton, CA. He was assigned as the training officer and deployed as the Naval Beach Group Representative for COMPHIBRON ONE onboard USS NEW ORLEANS.  During this deployment he was selected into the Special Operations Community.

    Upon completion of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training in August of 1997, CAPT Sandway was assigned to EOD Mobile Unit TWO. His assignments included Officer In Charge and deployed with USS JOHN C. STENNIS BATTLE GROUP to the Persian Gulf. Upon return, he was assigned as the Readiness Officer. He transferred in June of 2000 to EOD Group TWO.

  At EOD Group TWO, Captain Sandway was assigned as the Operations Officer for two years. It was during this tour he was selected for Executive Officer Afloat, and was re-assigned to EOD Mobile Unit TWO as the Executive Officer, where he served for two years. It was at EOD Mobile Unit TWO where Captain Sandway earned his Master EOD qualification.

    Captain Sandway transferred in 2004 to the OPNAV STAFF as the Conventional and Nuclear Weapons Safety Officer. During this tour in 2006, he deployed to Afghanistan for one year ISO Operation ENDURING FREEDOM where he served as the Deputy Commander of the Combined Joint Counter Improvised Device Task Force. It was during this tour he was selected for Command at Sea.

    Captain Sandway took command of RIVERINE SQUADRON THREE in 2007, and deployed with his command to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in 2008.  Upon completion of his successful tour, he attended the Senior Army War College in Carlisle, PA, earning a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies, and subsequent Joint Officer qualification. He transferred to EOD Group TWO in 2010 as Chief Staff Officer and Deputy Commander.

    He is married to the former Janet Spivey of Ellijay, Georgia and has four children. His personal awards include (2) Bronze Stars, (3) Meritorious Service Medals, (4) Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and (3) Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
