Be Red Cross Ready
Local Disaster Response
Ask the average person about the Red Cross and chances are they will mention disasters like hurricanes and floods. But the majority of the disasters the Naples American Red Cross responds to are single family house fires, which affect families locally. We do continue to prepare for other environmental disasters such as the volcano Vesuvius and any extended power outages.
At a scene, Red Cross volunteers work side-by-side with firefighters and other emergency personnel to ensure victims are given immediate relief. Immediate relief means getting them what they need most without waiting a day or more -- food, lodging, clothing, medication replacement, and mental health counseling. In the days following a disaster, the Red Cross continues to work with families while they find ways to rebuild their lives.
If you would like to become a member of the team responsible for providing hope and a helping hand, call or email the Naples Red Cross today and ask about the Disaster Action Team (DAT)and learn how you can receive free Disaster Preparedness training.
Get a kit. Make a plan. Be informed.
It’s important to prepare for possible disasters and other emergencies. Natural and human caused disasters can strike suddenly, at any time and anywhere. There are three actions everyone can take that can help make a difference:
Get a kit:
- Make one or purchase one suitable for your family at the Red Cross.
- Consider the needs of all family members and add supplies to your kit.
- Add additional supplies to keep at home or in your kit based on the different types of disasters for your area
Make a plan:
- Plan what to do in case you are separated during an emergency
- Plan what to do in case you have to evacuate
- Learn what disasters or emergencies occur in your area
Let Your Family Know You’re Safe
Tell your loved ones about the American Red Cross Safe and Well web site available throughRedCross.org. This Internet-based tool should be integrated into your emergency communications plan. People within a disaster-affected area can register themselves as “safe and well” and concerned family and friends who know the person’s phone number or address can search for messages posted by those who self-register. If you don’t have Internet access, call 1-866-GET-INFO to register yourself and your family.
