Command Master Chief (SS/SW) Brian J. McDonough enlisted in December 1990 and attended Recruit Training in Great Lakes, Illinois with follow-on orders to Basic Enlisted Submarine School and Electronics Technician (ET) "A" and "C" schools in Groton, Connecticut.


Early tours as a Submarine Navigation Electronics Technician included USS SAN FRANCISCO (SSN 711) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, qualifying in Submarines in March 1993; Deep Submergence Unit Detachment MYSTIC (DSRV 1) from 1996 to 2000, earning the Deep Submergence Insignia; and SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific in San Diego, California from 2000 to 2003.


Selected to Chief Petty Officer in 2002, he served as the Navigation Division Chief aboard USS SALT LAKE CITY (SSN 716) from 2003 to 2006 and qualified as Assistant Navigator.  During his tour as First LT at Naval Base Point Loma, he advanced to Senior Chief and qualified as a Chief of the Boat (COB).  He served as COB aboard USS JEFFERSON CITY (SSN 759) from April 2008 to April 2011, completing a highly successful 7th and 5th Fleet deployment and advancing to Master Chief.


Selected to the CMDCM program in 2011, he served as Command Master Chief of Naval Base Point Loma from August 2011 to December 2013 and then transitioned to the Surface Amphibious Force as Command Master Chief aboard USS ARLINGTON (LPD 24) from January 2014 to June 2016, taking the Ship and Crew from PreCom, through Maiden Deployment again in the 5th Fleet AOR.  Following this Amphib tour, he accepted orders to Bahrain and served as the COMUSNAVCENT/C5F Staff Command Master Chief from July 2016 to August 2018.


He is currently serving as the Command Master Chief at Naval Support Activity, Souda Bay, Greece.


Master Chief McDonough is a graduate of the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Course in 2008, the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 161 Brown) in 2011, the KEYSTONE Joint Senior Enlisted Leadership Course in July 2013, and the MCPON Executive Leadership Course in January 2015. Master Chief McDonough is qualified to wear the Enlisted Silver Submarine Dolphin Device, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Device, and the Enlisted Silver Deep Submergence Insignia.  He is authorized to wear the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and various campaign and service ribbons.
