Commander Tate L. Metlen was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Oregon, California, and Utah. He received his commission from the United Naval Academy in 2003 and received a Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture from the same. He holds Master’s Degrees in Business Management from American Military University, in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University, and in Defense and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He also holds a graduate certificate in Cyber Security from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Upon commissioning as a Surface Warfare Officer, Commander Metlen’s first duty assignment was Combat Information Center Officer, USS (LHD 2) Essex in Sasebo, Japan. Subsequent assignments included Training Officer, USS (FFG 40) Halyburton, Mayport, FL and Planner, Africa Regional Group, Sixth Fleet Staff, Naples, Italy.
In 2010, he laterally transferred into the Civil Engineer Corps and attended the CEC Officer School. The assignments following CECOS included Alfa 6, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133, Gulfport, MS; Construction Manager, Public Works Department, Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Africa; Assistant Public Works Officer, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Pearl Harbor, HI; Public Work Officer, JRB NAS New Orleans, LA.
Commander Metlen is currently the Executive Officer and Public Works Officer for Naval Support Facility Redzikowo as of June 2019.
Metlen is qualified as a Seabee Combat Warfare Officer and as a Surface Warfare Officer, a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Nevada, a Certified Energy Manager, and a member of the Acquisition Professional Community. His personal decorations include the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and other personal, service, unit and campaign awards.
