In a typical year, more than five million visitors come to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific to pay their respects to the dead and to enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of the Island. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, few national cemeteries can compete with the dramatic natural setting of the “Punchbowl.”

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM – The United States Navy (Navy) published a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to analyze the potential environmental effects associated with the construction and operation of a submarine dry dock replacement and waterfront production facility (Proposed Action) at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) on Joint Base Pearl Harbor‐Hickam, Oahu, Hawaii. The PHNSY & IMF is situated on the eastern shore of Pearl Harbor on the south side of the island of Oahu. The proposed project would provide required capability for depot-level maintenance on current and future classes of fast-attack submarines, as part of the Navy's fleet maintenance mission.

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM – At approximately 10:30 p.m. Jan. 14, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam security forces responded to a vehicle at Nimitz Gate that did not have authorized access to the base.  When the gate guard had the vehicle turn around, the guard noticed the smell of drugs and saw potential ordnance in the car.  Security forces responded immediately, and representatives from an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team reported to the scene.

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM – Two Department of Defense civilians died following a shooting at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam on Dec. 4.  The shooter, a Navy Sailor assigned to USS Columbia (SSN 771), died from self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Initial reports indicate the shooter and two shipyard civilian employees are deceased, and one shipyard civilian is in stable condition at a local hospital.

PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM – Officials at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam report the shooting incident at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard has been secured. One person is confirmed dead. The shooter has been tentatively identified as a U.S. Sailor. He reportedly shot and injured three Department of Defense civilian workers, before killing himself. The incident took place this afternoon at the shipyard’s Dry Dock 2. The base is no longer in lockdown.

(HONOLULU) – Navy Water Tender 1st Class Edwin B. McCabe, 27, of Newport, North Carolina will be buried September 25 at 11:30 a.m. with full military honors at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl). McCabe was aboard USS Oklahoma (BB 37) during Imperial Japan’s attack of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He was killed in action, but identification of his remains was delayed for more than seven decades.

On May 27, the Hospital Ship USNS Mercy was being maneuvered by two tugboats to transit Pearl Harbor from its berth at Hotel Pier as it prepared to go to sea.  As the Mercy turned to head out to the channel, the ship may have made contact with the floating dock leading to the USS Arizona Memorial. Strong prop wash from the ship pushed the floating dock and access structure (brow) approximately ten feet toward the memorial, damaging handrails and the dock’s infrastructure.
