Bringing Pets to Japan
Are you bringing, or planning to bring, pets to Japan? Here is some important information you need to know beforehand.
TRAVELING WITH PETS TO/FROM JAPAN: Pets may NOT travel via the CFAS shuttle bus or Japanese public transportation. Contact the Family Member Assistance Team (FMAT) via E-mail or come by building 310, first deck, to fill out a request form and provide a “copy of your orders”. Please submit requests to FMAT after receiving your itinerary and further information will be provided.
FMAT Office hours: Mon – Fri (0800 to 1630)
DSN (315) 252-3627
COMM: 011-81-956-50-3627 (Calling from U.S.)

Pets may not stay at the Navy Lodge, nor at any other TLA-approved hotel in Sasebo except Central Sasebo Hotel (there is a pet fee). Please also be aware that it is difficult to find rentals willing to accept pets. Additionally, dogs are not allowed in towers or second-floor townhouses in Navy Family Housing. Only 23 percent of Hario 2 or 3 bedroom and 38 percent of Main Base 2 or 3 bedroom can accommodate dogs.
MWR has a kennel, Paws 'n' Claws, with 10 spaces available for dogs, and 8 spaces for cats. For more information, please visit the Paws 'n' Claws section below, or call MWR at DSN 252-2905 (commercial 011-81-956-50-2905). Sasebo does have a base Veterinary Clinic (DSN 252-3585 or commercial 011-81-956-50-3585) to assist you with all information concerning your pets.
Pet Import Regulations and Restrictions have changed for SOFA personnel, effective June 6, 2005. The ONLY OFFICIAL pet import information pertinent to SOFA personnel is provided online by US Army Japan District Veterinary Command at: www.usarj.army.mil/organization/vet/index.htm.
Click the top link titled "Pet Import." This web site has been updated with the latest changes to US/Japan SOFA pet import requirements. Please visit this page and read carefully, to ensure you have all the paperwork necessary to bring your pet into Japan
Do Not refer directly to the Japan Animal Quarantine Service web site. The information is current, of course, but it does not completely apply to SOFA personnel.
