Commanding Officer, HSM-77

Commander Stephen “CHEESE” Steacy of Petaluma, CA is a 2001 graduate of The George Washington University.

At sea, his career as a naval aviator includes assignments with Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) Five One (HSL 51), in Japan, aboard USS O’BRIEN (DD 725), USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), USS CHANCELORSVILLE (CG 62) and USS LASSEN (DDG 82); Assistant Navigator aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71); and as an HSL 49 detachment officer-in-charge aboard USS THACH (FFG 43).

Ashore, he served as the Flag Aide to the Commander of Naval Service Training Command in Great Lakes, IL and as a Budget Planner for US Forces Iraq in Baghdad, Iraq. Following his deployment aboard USS THACH, he served as both the Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer for HSL 49 and as the Operations Officer for Commander Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CHSMWP).

Leaving San Diego, CDR Steacy then served as an action officer on the Joint Staff, J-33 Deputy Directorate: Nuclear, Homeland Defense, and Current Operations. He was selected for squadron command and reported to HSM-77 in Atsugi, Japan, as Executive Officer in November 2017.

He is a 2009 graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and a 2015 graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College.

CDR Steacy was selected as the HSMWP Officer of the Year in 2014. His personal decorations include Joint Meritorious Service Medals, Navy Commendation Medals, and various other personal, service, and campaign awards.
