Commander Tom “Tool” Uhl was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia and attended high school in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 2002 and earned his Wings of Gold while assigned to the HT-8 “Eightballers” of Milton, Florida in January 2004.
Commander Uhl’s initial operational assignment was with the HSL-49 “Scorpions” in San Diego, California where he deployed in USS Ingraham (FFG 61) assigned to Expeditionary Strike Group THREE in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and counter-piracy operations. He also deployed in USS Princeton (CG 59) assigned to Nimitz Carrier Strike Group in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. He was awarded the 2007 U.S. Naval Air Forces Navy-Marine Association Leadership Award.
In March 2013, he joined the HSM-75 “Wolf Pack” for his Department Head tour, deploying with CVW-11 onboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and Syria contingency operations in the Red Sea. While assigned to HSM-75 he served as squadron Safety Officer, Officer-In-Charge for Detachment FOUR aboard USS Princeton (CG 59), Maintenance Officer, and Operations Officer. He was selected as the 2015 HSMWINGPAC “Moose” Donovan Officer Leadership Award recipient. In February 2019, he reported to the HSM-77 “Saberhawks” as the Executive Officer.
Ashore, Commander Uhl joined the HSM-41 “Seahawks” in October 2007 for Fleet Replacement Squadron flight instructor duty. From September 2010 to August 2012 he was assigned to Navy Personnel Command, PERS-43, in Millington, Tennessee as Helicopter Junior Officer Assignments Officer. Following his Department Head tour, in November 2015 he reported to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium as the Deputy Executive Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander, U.S. European Command.
Commander Uhl holds a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Masters of Business Administration from San Diego State University.
He has flown more than 2,200 flight hours. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), and various other personal, unit, and campaign decorations.
