Commander Jonathan D. Gray is a native of Paducah, KY. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, Oxford, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology and was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps in May 2000.
After earning his wings of gold in May 2002, Commander Gray reported to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Three (HC-3) in San Diego, CA for Fleet Replacement Pilot training in the MH-60S Knighthawk. In the fall of 2002 Commander Gray proceeded to Norfolk, VA for his first squadron tour at Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Six (HC-6). While a member of the Chargers, Commander Gray was deployed to the Arabian Gulf flying missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM onboard the USS DETROIT (AOE-4) as well as on USS SAIPAN (LHA-2) in support of the multinational ADRIATIC ENGAGEMENT exercise. While at HC-6, he served as the Assistant Training Officer, Maintenance Division Officer, Personnel Officer, Detachment Communications Officer, Detachment Safety Officer, Detachment Training Officer, and Helicopter Control Officer.
Commander Gray reported to Helicopter Training Squadron Eight (HT-8) and assumed duties as a TH-57 Instructor Pilot in October 2005. While at HT-8, he served as Ground Safety Officer, Security Manager, Standardization Pilot and Maintenance Officer. Commander Gray flew over 1,500 instructor hours and earned his Airline Transport Pilot License.
In November 2008, Commander Gray reported aboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) as the Air Transfer Officer and Assistant Air Operations Officer. USS RONALD REAGAN deployed as part of Carrier Strike Group SEVEN in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During this tour, he also qualified as an Officer of the Deck (Underway), Assistant Command Duty Officer, and served as the Deputy INSURV Coordinator.
In September 2010, Commander Gray was ordered to the Eightballers of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Eight (HSC-8). He has served as the squadrons Safety Officer, Combat Logistics Force (CLF) OIC onboard USNS Bridge (T-AOE-10) and was assigned as the squadron Operations Officer while attached to Carrier Airwing NINE (CVW-9). CVW-9 deployed onboard USS JOHN C STENNIS (CVN-74) as part of Carrier Strike Group THREE in support of OPERATIONS NEW DAWN and ENDURING FREEDOM.
In November 2013, Commander Gray reported to United States Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. There he served as strategic planner in the Plans and Policy directorate (J5) and later as a future operations planner in the newly formed Campaign Operations Branch in the Global Operations directorate (J3).
In December 2016, Commander Gray reported to USS JOHN C STENNIS (CVN-74) as the Safety Officer. There he supervised over 3,000 Sailors in industrial workplace safety and environmental compliance, earning the ship consecutive CNAP Safety “S” awards.
Commander Gray has accumulated more than 3,000 mishap-free flight hours. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, three Navy Achievement Medals, and numerous unit awards. He has completed an Executive Masters of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School, earned Phase One Joint Professional Military Education through the Air Force Air Command and Staff College Distant Learning Program, and earned Phase Two Joint Professional Military Education from the Joint Forces Staff College.
In March 2019, Commander Gray reported to Naval Air Facility Misawa as Executive Officer. He is married to the former Lea Sutterfield of Olive Branch, MS and has three daughters, Helen, Cecilia, and Clara.
