U.S. Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia Commanding Officer

After graduation from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1996, he earned Naval Flight Officer wings and later qualified as an Electronic Counter Measures Officer in the EA-6B Prowler in 2000. CAPT Tornga joined VAQ-136, stationed at NAF Atsugi, Japan, making multiple deployments aboard the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63).

Upon completion of his junior officer tour in 2003, CAPT Tornga accepted orders as an instructor at Electronic Attack Weapons School at NAS Whidbey Island where he taught advanced radar jamming tactics, techniques, and procedures. In 2004 he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Association Outstanding Leadership Award.

From July 2005 through July 2007, CAPT Tornga served as the Training Officer at VAQ-134, deploying twice with the Garudas to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. Through his efforts with the Garudas he was selected as the 2007 Commander Electronic Attack Wing Pacific Prowler Tactics Instructor of the Year.

In September of 2008 he completed studies at the College of Naval Command and Staff and the Navy Operational Planning Course at the U.S. Navy War College at Naval Station Newport, RI. CAPT Tornga returned to NASWhidbey Island, joining the Black Ravens of VAQ-135. He served as the maintenance officer, deploying aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN 68), again supporting OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.

Upon completion of his department head tour in 2010 he was assigned to United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany. As a Regional Military-to-Military Program Manager, he directed the U.S. joint military activities with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia.

CAPT Tornga commanded the Wizards of VAQ-133, deploying to the Western Pacific aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) in 2016, the squadron’s first deployment with the EA-18G Growler.

He served as the Deputy N50 Strategy and Policy on the combined staff of Commander US Naval Forces Europe/Africa and Commander US SIXTH FLEET in Naples, Italy.

His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Strike Flight Air Medal (10 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards).
