Singapore Area Coordinator (SAC) is committed to preventing pollution, protecting the environment, conserving resources, and providing environmental services for the region, tenant commands, and the fleet. The environmental policy for the Region states, “Comply with the rules, Always improve, Reduce waste, and Eliminate pollution.” In order to accomplish these commitments, SAC implements and maintains an effective Environmental Management System (EMS) for all activities that occur within the Region.  The Region firmly believes that national defense and environmental protection are, and must be, compatible goals.

SAC operates award-winning environmental programs in the following areas:

  • Air Pollution

  • Drinking Water

  • Wastewater

  • Hazardous Material

  • Hazardous Waste

  • Shipboard Generated Industrial Waste

  • Solid Waste

  • Medical Waste

  • Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants

  • Cultural Resources

  • Asbestos

  • Lead-Based Paint

  • Pest Control

  • Spill Prevention and Response

  • Radon

  • Energy Management

  • Environmental Planning

Each of the environmental programs mentioned above is operated in compliance with the Department of Defense’s Overseas Environmental Baseline Guidance Document, Navy Policies, Executive Orders, and applicable Government of Singapore Environmental Regulations.

To maintain compliance, each year SAC conducts an Internal EMS Audit and analysis of significant environmental aspects. The results help to identify potential environmental impacts or risks to human health and the environment.  Goals are set by command leadership during the annual management review to ensure continual improvement of the EMS.  Goals set for Fiscal Year 2018 are:

  1. Energy Reduction – Meet the standards set by E.O. 13693 to reduce energy intensity by 2.5% annually compared to the 2015 baseline.

  2. Solid Waste Diversion – Meet the standard set by E.O. 13693 of a 50% diversion rate annually.

  3. Hazardous Material Management – Reduce Internal Audit findings by 50% compared to 2017 and avoid any significant deficiencies during the February 2018 Environmental Quality Assessment.

SAC also participates in various environmental events throughout the year in coordination with various local governmental and non-governmental agencies:

  • International Coastal Cleanup – Singapore

  • World Water Day

  • Earth Day
