CMDCM (SW/AW) Justin Gray is a native of Shoshone, Idaho and graduated from Shoshone High School in May of 1991. Immediately following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attending Basic Training, Nuclear Field Machinist Mate “A” School and Naval Nuclear Power School at Naval Training Center, Orlando, Florida. He completed his nuclear prototype training and Engineering Laboratory Technician “C” school at Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit Idaho Falls, Idaho in June of 1992.
His operational nuclear propulsion tours include USS CALIFORNIA (CGN 36), USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), and USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69). He completed a maintenance activity tour in R-5/R-10 division onboard USS SIMON LAKE (AS 33). He has also completed three instructor tours at NUCLEAR POWER TRAINING UNIT BALSTON SPA and SUBMARINE LEARNING FACILITY NORFOLK, qualifying Master Training Specialist each time.
He served as the CMC for USS GONZALEZ from October 2013 to March 2016. During his tour GONZALEZ earned consecutive Battle “E” awards and the 2015 Retention Excellence Award. He served as Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads’ CMC from April 2016 to March 2018 earning the Retention Excellence Award for 2016 and 2017. He became the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic CMC in March 2018.
Master Chief Gray is a Dean’s List graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 150 Gray). He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Resource Management from New School University and a Master’s Degree in Systems Engineering from Old Dominion University.
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), Good Conduct Medal (8 awards), Humanitarian Service Medal and various unit citations and awards.
