Eligibility and Entrance age requirements of Kindergarten and First grade

In order to be eligible to enter school in Connecticut:

o    Children must be 5 on or before January 1st following their entrance in to Kindergarten.

o    Children must be 6 on or before January 1st following their entrance to first grade.

CT Immunization/Physical Requirements

The State of Connecticut Department of Public Health implements a comprehensive immunization program. The goal of the Immunization Program is to stop the spread of diseases that are vaccine preventable. Complete immunizations are required prior to school entrance.

For current immunization requirements, click Connecticut Immunization Requirements

In order to provide the best educational experience, school personnel must understand your child’s health needs. State law requires complete primary immunizations and a health assessment by a legally qualified practitioner of medicine, an advanced practice registered nurse or registered nurse, a physician assistant or the school medical advisor prior to school entrance in Connecticut (C.G.S. Secs. 10-204a and 10-206).

An immunization update and additional health assessments are required in the 6th or 7th grade and in the 9th or 10th grade. Specific grade level will be determined by the local board of education.

A physical is REQUIRED prior to entry into Connecticut schools and must have been completed within the previous year. The physical form can be found at Connecticut Health Assessment/Physical Form

Students who compete or plan to compete in school sports activities must have a sports physical completed prior to beginning practice or try-outs. Sports physical must be completed on a yearly basis. Sports physical are generally more comprehensive than the school entrance physicals. Please contact your local school district for more information.
