Ombudsman training is thorough and continuous. Once an ombudsman is appointed they are required to go through Ombudsman Basic Training (OBT). This 16 hour class gives the new ombudsman the opportunity to learn what their job is and obtain hands on experience with many facets of their new job. If the ombudsman is unable to get to training within the first 6 weeks of their appointment, they are able to take Ombudsman Webinar Training. The OBT Orientation is available for all newly appointed ombudsmen. This 90 minute training gives the ombudsman enough information to begin to serve their command and families. They are still required to attend an Ombudsman Basic Training as soon as possible. The OBT Orientation is NOT a substitute for the OBT!
Once they have completed the Ombudsman Basic Training, Ombudsmen are able to continue their education through Advanced Trainings offered by Fleet and Family Support Centers and local Ombudsman Assemblies.

Training is an important factor of a successful Ombudsman Program. Trained Ombudsmen are less likely to make errors in judgment that reflect poorly on the command. Basic training is required of all Ombudsmen and must be documented. This Course provides the foundational information necessary for Ombudsmen to properly execute their duties required by OPNAVINST 1750.1G.
