A native of Chester, Va., Cmdr. Daniel Nelson graduated and received his commission from the United States Naval Academy in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics.
As a Submarine Officer, Nelson completed his division officer tour onboard USS MONTPELIER (SSN 765) serving as the Electrical Officer, Main Propulsion Assistant, Assistant Weapons Officer, and Damage Control Assistant. During this tour, he deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and completed his nuclear engineer qualification. Ashore, he served as a lead strategic Information Operations Planner in the Technology Studies Group at Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Norfolk, Va.
After laterally transferring to a Human Resource Officer, Nelson served as an instructor at Center for Personal and Professional Development, an acquisition Assistant Program Manager for recruiting systems at PMW 240, Head of Enlisted Accession Plans and Policy at OPNAV N132, and N1 Directorate Head at Center for Security Forces. In August 2020, he reported to Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads as the Executive Officer.
Nelson is certified as a Professional of Human Resources (PHR) and holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School.
His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four), Navy Achievement Medals (three), and various campaign and unit awards.
