Master Chief Petty Officer Thomas G. Alex enlisted in the Navy July 2000 and attended basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. After completing recruit training, he attended Gunner’s Mate “A” School and MK 41 Vertical Launching System “C” School.
Master Chief Alex’s initial tour was onboard USS PAUL HAMILTON (DDG 60) located in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he completed two WESTPAC deployments as Cruise Missile Technician in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. During this tour he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification and served as lead Rescue Swimmer.
His next tour was Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU) where he served as division LCPO and deployed twice to Afghanistan. During his time in Afghanistan, he qualified as an Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist and Aviation Warfare Specialist. While at DEVGRU, he also graduated from U.S. Army Airborne School receiving his designation as a Naval Parachutist.
His first shore tour was Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. His duties included: Recruit Division Commander, Basic Swimming and Water Survival Instructor, and Ship (Barracks) LCPO. During this tour he qualified as Master Training Specialist and attended the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy Class 175 (Grey).
Master Chief Alex’s next assignment led him to Naval Beach Unit SEVEN, Sasebo, Japan where he served as Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) Craftmaster and Detachment OIC. He personally logged over 1,000 operational LCAC flight hours in support of eight multi-national exercises with six partner nations in the Pacific Fleet and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
His next assignment was Center for Information Warfare Training, Corry Station, Pensacola, FL as the echelon 3 Command Climate Specialist and Master Training Specialist Program manager. During this tour he qualified as Enlisted Information Warfare Specialist and attended Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course 185.
His current duty station is Naval Support Activity, Lakehurst, NJ, as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader.
Master Chief Alex's decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit and other campaign awards.
