LCDR Eric P. Rion, a Charlotte, NC native, enlisted in the Navy in September 1988. He completed Recruit Training in Orlando, FL, Basic Electronics and Electricity School in San Diego, CA, Basic Enlisted Submarine School in Groton, CT, Sonar Technician Submarines (STS) “A” School and General Submarine Sonar Maintenance “C” School in San Diego, CA through the Advanced Electronics training pipeline program.
In May 1990 he reported to his first submarine, a Charleston, SC-based nuclear ballistic missile submarine, the USS TECUMSEH (SSBN 628) (B) where he qualified in submarines. LCDR Rion completed 3 patrols, various slow approach operations and the ship's decommissioning at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. From September 1993 to November 1997, he served aboard the USS PENNSYLVANIA (SSBN 735) (B) in Kings Bay, GA. He then transferred to TRIDENT Training Facility, Kings Bay, as an instructor. In November 2000 he transferred to USS NEBRASKA (SSBN 739) (B) where he was selected and initiated as a Chief Petty Officer and transferred to the USS TENNESSEE (SSBN 734) (G).
LCDR Rion received his commission through the Limited Duty Officer Program and became an Ensign in February 2003. He reported aboard the submarine tender USS FRANK CABLE (AS 40) in Agana, Guam. Aboard the FRANK CABLE he served as the Electronics Repair (R4) Division Officer, the R4 Production Officer, and qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer. In March 2005, he returned to a submarine and served as the assistant weapons officer aboard the USS HENRY M JACKSON (SSBN 730) (B) in Bangor, WA. During this tour, he completed his submarine officer qualifications, earning his gold dolphins.
In January 2007, he arrived at “The Tip of the Spear” the only forward deployed submarine squadron, Commander, Submarine Squadron Fifteen (CSS-15) to serve as the squadron Weapons Officer in Agana, Guam. In November 2010, LCDR Rion transferred to Naval Submarine Support Center (NSSC) Kings Bay, where he served as the Electronics Material Officer (EMO). In February of 2011, he joined TRIDENT Refit Facility, Kings Bay where he served as the Weapons Production Management Assistant (WPMA). In June of 2014, he joined Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN where he had the distinct pleasure of serving as the Submarine and Nuclear Power LDO/CWO detailer where he as mentored and placed over 1000 submarine and nuclear power Limited Duty and Chief Warrant Officers throughout the fleet.
In September 2016, he joined Naval Weapons Station Earle where he currently serves as the Executive Officer.
LCDR Rion is qualified Surface Warfare Officer and Submarine Officer, and his personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four gold stars), Navy Achievement Medal (four gold stars) and various unit commendations and service ribbons. He has a Bachelors of Science in Adult Education from Valdosta State University and a Masters in Business Administration with a focus in Project Management from Brenau University.
