YORKTOWN, Va. (Sept. 27, 2016) – More than 200 service members, veterans, Department of Defense (DoD) civilians, and family members raced in the second-annual Barbarian Bruiser Trail Run Sept. 24 at Cheathem Annex in Yorktown, Va.


The Barbarian Bruiser is a race in which participants have to overcome 20 obstacles ranging from mud pits to 10-foot-high walls to tire drags.

NAVAL WEAPONS STATION YORKTOWN, Va -- For many the choice to have children may be the biggest decision they will make in their adult lives. Often, expecting parents are faced with many questions, but a majority of those questions can be answered by the professionals at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown Fleet and Family Support Center’s New Parent Support Program.


The goal of the New Parent Support Program is to promote healthy families through a variety of services including home visits, support groups, and parenting classes.

Retired and active duty service members, civilian employees, local government officials and the citizens of Yorktown and Williamsburg enjoyed a week’s worth of events celebrating the 99th birthday of  Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Yorktown.


The week’s celebratory events began Aug. 8 with a U.S. Fleet Forces Four Star Edition Band concert and a Gloucester High School Navy JROTC silent drill performance in front of a crowd of more than 200 at the historic Yorktown Riverwalk.


WPNSTA Yorktown History and Heritage Committee strengthens through diversity

As part of the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown Command Managed Equal Opportunity program, Sailors and Civilian employees assigned here came together to observe Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender month the contributions of LGBT service members.


The event, held 22 June, was organized by the WPNSTA Yorktown History Heritage Committee to reaffirm the understanding that through diversity we are stronger.

When I travel throughout the Fleet, I am frequently asked, "What is it that makes the best commands better than the rest?"  I always say, "Two things:  unwavering commitment to the Navy's mission, and clear communications."


 


Our Navy's mission is quite simple, "to be prepared to conduct prompt and sustained combat incident to operations at sea."  Make no mistake:  it is our job to succeed in that mission, to be ready to not just fight, but to win. The nation depends on it. And it requires every one of us to pull together as a team to be successful in that mission.

Naval Weapons Station (WPNSTA) Yorktown conducted a change-of-command ceremony aboard the facility Feb. 24. Capt. Matthew Kosnar relieved Capt. Paul C. Haebler as WPNSTA Yorktown commanding officer during the time-honored ceremony.


WPNSTA Yorktown, York County host active-shooter exercise

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, 1 Feb., an active-shooter exercise began at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown with the sound of gunshots as the active shooter hid in a building, demanding a negotiator while multiple roll-players lay injured.


The active-shooter drill held here served as part of the 2017 Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield Exercise, from 30 Jan. to 10 Feb., and tested installation and local emergency responders’ ability to establish a perimeter, provide first-aid, and coordinate the transportation of victims to local medical treatment facilities.

YORKTOWN, Va., -- Naval Weapons Station Yorktown (WPNSTA Yorktown) will host the 2017 Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield Exercise, from 30 January to 10 February.  This annual exercise increases safety and security for base personnel through training of Navy and civilian law enforcement in response to attacks both on and off naval installations. Scenarios may include active shooter and mass-casualty drills as part of the Navy anti-terrorism, force protection (ATFP) security training.
