WPNSTA Yorktown to hold Hurricane Response Exercise

YORKTOWN, Va., -- Naval Weapons Station Yorktown (WPNSTA Yorktown) will host a hurricane response exercise, May 8-19 called HURREX-Citadel Gale 2017. (HURREX/CG-17).

This annual exercise prepares WPNSTA Yorktown emergency responders to respond to adverse weather threats in the Virginia area.  The exercise also tests our installation and personnel’s ability to recover from potential hurricane related damage and flooding.

HURREX/CG 17 will involve all U.S. Fleet Forces and Commander, Navy Installations Command bases, and consist of two simulated storm systems developing and intensifying to hurricane strength, threatening the Gulf Coast and East Coast regions.

WPNSTA Yorktown exercise coordinators have taken measures to minimize disruptions to normal base operations; however, exercise scenarios may cause increased off-base traffic and delays accessing WPNSTA Yorktown and Cheatham Annex.  Residents near the installation may see increased security activity associated with the exercise.  Base personnel should register for the AtHoc Wide-Area Alert Network (WAAN) to receive phone, text and/or email simulated recall notification, evacuation directions, and family accounting procedures.  Local communities, law enforcement and first responders will also participate in the exercise.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to the WPNSTA Yorktown Public Affairs office at (757) 887-4939.
