A Search and Rescue (SAR) team from Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island rescued two people on Saturday, September 29.


For the first rescue on Saturday morning, the SAR crew were called to rescue a climber who had fallen approximately 40 feet near Mt. Shuksan, east of Bellingham, Wash. at an elevation of 5,500 feet.


The injured climber was hoisted aboard the SAR helicopter and flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle by 10:30 a.m.


For the second mission on Saturday afternoon, the SAR team flew to Snowking Mountain, southeast of Marblemount, Wash., to rescue a hiker at an elevation of 5,500 feet.  The hiker was unable to beat an incoming storm back to the trailhead because of an injured knee.


When the hiker was hoisted on board the helicopter he refused medical attention so he was dropped off at the Marblemount Ranger Station and handed over to the Park Rangers and Skagit County Sheriff Department.


NAS Whidbey Island SAR has conducted 56 total missions throughout Washington State this year, including 41 rescues, eight searches and seven medical evacuations.


The Navy SAR unit operates three MH-60S helicopters from NAS Whidbey Island as search and rescue/medical evacuation (SAR/MEDEVAC) platforms for the EA-18G aircraft as well as other squadrons and personnel assigned to the installation.  Pursuant to the National SAR Plan of the United States, the unit may also be used for civil SAR/MEDEVAC needs to the fullest extent practicable on a non-interference basis with primary military duties according to applicable national directives, plans, guidelines and agreements; specifically, the unit may launch in response to tasking by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (based on a Washington State Memorandum of Understanding) for inland missions, and/or tasking by the United States Coast Guard for all other aeronautical and maritime regions, when other assets are unavailable.

The following information is provided as part of the Navy's water testing program around the Area 6 landfill near Ault Field. As of April 13, 2018, the Navy has sampled 15 drinking water wells and 13 groundwater wells near the Area 6 Landfill.

NAVAL AIR STATION WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. – Naval Air Station Whidbey Island will hold it’s fourth annual  Public Open House on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Ault Field from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the base’s establishment. The base’s official commissioning was announced on Sept. 21, 1942, at the Seaplane Base by  Commanding Officer Capt. Cyril T. Simard.

NAVAL AIR STATION WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. – Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) operations for aircraft stationed at NAS Whidbey Island are scheduled to occur at the Outlying Field (OLF) in Coupeville, Wash., Monday, June 5 through Friday, June 9, 2017. No aircraft carrier-based flight training for aircraft stationed at NAS Whidbey Island is scheduled to occur at Ault Field the week of June 4 through June 10.

NAVAL AIR STATION WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. – A Search and Rescue (SAR) team from Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island conducted two rescues this past weekend, one on Saturday June 3, the other on Sunday, June 4, 2017.  The first rescue was in Olympic Mountains, the other on Mount Baker.

NAVAL AIR STATION
WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash
. – A Search and Rescue (SAR) team of five from Naval Air
Station (NAS) Whidbey Island conducted two rescues on Sunday, May 21,
2017.  The first rescue was near Lake
Cushman on Mount Washington at 4,500 feet and the second rescue was at 8,700
feet on the south side of Mount Baker for two snowmobilers who fell into a deep
glacier crevasse.

As of May 12, 2017, the Navy has received 211 lab results from drinking water sampling at private residence and public supply wells in the areas surrounding both NAS Whidbey Island's Ault Field and Outlying Landing Field (OLF) Coupeville properties.

– On February 28, Lt. Austin Howard and Lt. Ronald
Novak thought they were going to be the first flight event of the day for
Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 139. However, once fully dressed in their
flight gear, they were met by Lt. James Salassi, assistant director of the
Aviation Survival Training Center (ASTC) on board Naval Air Station Whidbey
Island (NASWI), and members of NASWI Search and Rescue (SAR), who informed them
that they would be participants in a SAR exercise.

In response to requests from elected officials, the Navy has agreed to extend (by 30 days) the public comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for EA-18G Growler airfield operations at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The original extended public comment period of 75 days was due to conclude January 25. The comment period will now conclude on February 24.
