LCDR Katherine Martinez Alvarez

Commanding Officer, Transient Personnel Unit - Puget Sound

Lt. Cmdr. Katherine G. Martinez Alvarez hails from the Dominican Republic and San Juan, Puerto Rico. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design in Architecture from the University of Puerto Rico in 2008. Immediately after, she worked in the civilian sector and was awarded 1st place and finalist in both, a local and an international design competition.  In 2010 she joined the United Stated Navy and earned her commission as a Naval Officer from the Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI.

Her first tour was in the USS New Orleans (LPD-18), where she served as First Division Officer, Assistant First Lieutenant and Engineering Controls Officer. During this tour she earned the Officer of the Deck, Surface Warfare Officer and Diesel Engineer Officer of the Watch qualifications. In addition, she served as Boat Officer for the first Maritime Readiness Force (MRF) team for anti-piracy operations in the Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet (C5F) area of responsibility (AOR) in 2012.

During her second tour onboard the USS Pelelieu (LHA-5), she served as the Auxiliaries Officer and as Steam Engineering Officer of the Watch. She was part of the decommissioning crew in 2015. During this tour, she was accepted into the Human Resources community of the Navy as a Human Resources Officer where she was offered the opportunity to attend to the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. In 2017, she earned her Masters of Science in Management in Manpower Systems Analysis and her Joint Professional Military Education I.

She proceeded to Minneapolis, MN, to serve as the Operations Officer for the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). In Fiscal Year 2018, she was awarded the recognition of the U.S. Military Entrance Processing Command Military Member of the Year and her unit was awarded the ‘Best in the West’ award in addition to five MEPS of Excellence (MOE) awards. She earned her Professional Human Resources (PHR) certification in 2019 and assumed command of Transient Personnel Unit Puget Sound in Silverdale, WA, in July 2020.

Her personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various unit awards and citations.
