LCDR Alfonso Duarte


Commanding Officer, Transient Personnel Unit---Puget Sound 

LCDR Alfonso Duarte is a native of California, growing up in the Los Angeles area.  He enlisted in the United States Navy in August of 1996.  His first tour of duty was Helicopter Combat Support Squadron EIGHT FIVE (HC-85) NAS North Island, as a Metal Smith (AMS Airman).  He deployed with two aircraft carriers (USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63) and USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64)).  During his first operational tour, he earned his Collateral Duty Inspector, Jet Engine Turn, and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist Qualifications.

He then served an Instructor tour at Naval Air Reserve Point Mugu, CA.  Following September 11th, he was accepted into the Special Reaction Team (SRT) of Naval Base Ventura County.  His SRT training included Close Quarter Combat and Counter Terrorism measures.  During this tour, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.    

His third tour was with Fleet Logistics Support Squadron SIX ONE (VR-61) Whidbey Island.  He was designated a Quality Assurance Officer on the McDonnell Douglas C-9B Skytrain.  During this tour, he was accepted to Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Pensacola, Florida.  Following commissioning, he completed Naval Flight Officer training at VT-4 in Pensacola, FL. He then transferred to Carrier Airborne Command and Control Squadron ONE TWO ZERO in Norfolk, VA.  After VAW-120, LCDR Duarte designated as a Human Resource Officer (HRO).

As an HRO, his tours included Navy Personnel Command, Officer Post Selection Board Matters, where he served as Deputy Branch Head and Department Head of Officer promotion matters.  His next tour was at Naval Air Forces Pacific, where he served as Deputy, Manpower Plans Officer. His following tour was Navy Recruiting District San Francisco where he served as Operations Officer and Force Protection Officer, during which his command earned the 2016 National District of the Year. LCDR Duarte completed his Master's Degree in Military Operational Art and Science with the U.S. Air Force's Air Command and Staff College and is now the  commanding officer of TPU Puget Sound.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various unit awards and citations, as well as a qualified Master Training Specialist.
