MUCM (SW) Dereck C. Werner, United States Navy

MUCM(SW) Dereck Werner is a native of, Jacksonville, AR and graduated from Whitehaven High School, Memphis, TN in 1983. 

While attending college, he enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves in October 1984. After graduating from Recruit Training Command, San Diego CA, he attended Construction Mechanic A-School at Naval Construction Training Center Port Hueneme, CA and was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 28.

In September 1992, he attended the Armed Forces School of Music, Joint Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia Beach, VA and cross-rated from Construction Mechanic (CM) to Navy Musician (MU) as Bass Guitar and Tuba Instrumentalist.

Over the next 28 years Werner proudly performed in 53 countries, 47 states, for eleven TV appearances and multiple domestic and international Presidential/Flag-level DOD/NATO events: his duty stations include SEVENTH Fleet Band, Yokosuka, JP; SIXTH Fleet Band, Naples, Italy; Navy Band Southwest, San Diego CA; Navy Band New Orleans, New Orleans, LA and PACIFIC Fleet Band, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Werner was selected for Chief Petty officer in 2007 and initiated by the Greater New Orleans CPO Mess. He has sponsored three Chiefs, led the Navy Region Hawaii CPO Color Guard, was elected Commander Naval Region Northwest (CNRNW) CPO Mess President, FY13 CNRNW Phase 2-Lead and Heritage-Lead for FY14 USS TURNER JOY (DD-951) Legacy Academy Bremerton, WA.

His tours as Senior Enlisted Leader includes Navy Band Northwest, Silverdale, WA; Center for Service Support, Rating Subject Matter Expert (SME), Newport, RI and MU Detailer for Navy Music, Millington, TN.  After leaving TN in April 2019, Werner transferred to Navy Band Southeast, Jacksonville, FL, where he proudly serves as Senior Enlisted Leader for his “twilight tour” in the United States Navy. 

Career highlights include commemorating the 50th Anniversary of WWII across the Pacific region, 2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City UT, supporting the Hurricane Katrina evacuation and spearheading the first overhaul of the Navy Musician rating manuals since WWII.  He has proudly deployed on board USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19), USS LA SALLE (AGF 3), USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52), USS SIMPSON (FFG-56), HMAS TOBRUK (LC 50) and USNS MERCY (T-AH 19) earning his Enlisted Surface Warfare Qualification.

Werner has a Master of Music degree from Northern Illinois University (92) and a Bachelor of Music degree from Memphis State University (89).  He has also completed the Basic Music Course, Staff Arranger Course, Senior Musician Course and Navy Instructor Training Course.
He is happily married and resides in Fleming Island FL.
