The Youth Activities Center offers a variety of programs and events. School-Age Care programs are age-appropriate childcare services for youth kindergarten to 12 years old and enrolled in elementary school. These educational and recreational programs include arts and crafts, group games, field trips, guest speakers, special projects, volunteer projects and special events.
Specific programs include the Before-School Program (15 children required), the After-School Program, the Before/After-School Program, in-service school days and holiday programs and full week camps (summer camp and spring and winter breaks).
The Youth Recreation program is available Tuesday through Saturday for youth kindergarten to 18 years old. The Youth Activities Center also is open for special events including dances and pool parties, field trips and lock-ins.
Ages for pre-teen dances are kindergarten to 12 years old while teen dances are for youth 13 to 18. Youth kindergarten through 18 can participate in the monthly field trips to local amusement facilities, but ages may vary depending on the type of trip planned. All participants must be registered on file for emergency purposes.
Lock-ins are held about once every three months; separate lock-ins are held for pre-teens and teens. Doors will lock at 6 p.m. on Friday and open for youth to be self-released or picked up by parents at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
The MWR Youth Program also sponsors and co-sponsors various special events throughout the year that provide the base community with entertaining events that enhance their family's quality of life and allow youth to raise funds. Events include holiday carnivals, a base-wide Easter egg hunt, a holiday tree-lighting ceremony, the Month of the Military Child Celebration and Seabee Days
The Youth Sports Program covers a wide variety of sports and instructional classes for military and DoD youth three to 17 years old. The program features sports leagues such as flag football, basketball, roller hockey, t-ball, soccer and sand volleyball. Youth are divided by ages and play round robin schedules on-base as well as in off-base invites and scrimmages.
Instructional classes for various ages include dance, tumbling, karate, aerobics and cheerleading while fitness and recreation activities include fun runs, obstacle course competitions, tournaments, sports clinics, fitness classes and special leagues.
Coaches and other volunteers always are needed. Coaches are required to be certified by the National Alliance of Youth Sports. All coaches must be at least 16 years old if coaching with another adult 18 years old or older. In addition, all coaches must complete a certified course in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
All volunteers must receive background checks as described in the Navy Youth Recreation Program Instruction, BUPERSINST 1710.21. Both coaches and volunteers must conduct themselves in a manner that positively promotes the MWR Department of CBC Gulfport.
The Youth Activities Center now is a member of the National Boys & Girls Club of America. Children enrolled in the School-Age Care and Recreation Program will be able to participate in five core program areas: character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts, sports, and fitness and recreation.
