Housing for Unaccompanied Personnel

Unaccompanied personnel reporting to Guantanamo Bay are assigned housing in accordance with their rank. Unaccompanied Housing (UH) is conveniently located near the center of the base on Sherman Avenue allowing immediate access to the main dining facilities, chapel, gym, and fitness center. It's just a short walk away from the Navy Exchange, commissary, McDonalds, and Subway.

The UH houses approximately 1,600 Naval Station service members in three buildings, and approximately 1500 JTF service members in 2 diverted housing areas:

  • Building 1678 provides permanent party billeting for all E1 through E3 unaccompanied personnel
  • Building 1670 houses all E4 through E6
  • Building 2147 all E7 through O10. Building 2147 also provides accommodations for personnel temporarily assigned duty under instruction to the station or to tenant commands.

Accommodations are one or two persons to a room based on pay grade and square footage. Building 1670 serves as the check-in point for all buildings and is manned 24 hours a day. Linen is provided at check-in.

As an added convenience to residents, there are lounges equipped with televisions and vending machines.  An onsite Liberty Center is located at Bldg 1670 which consists of computer stations, game room, TV lounge and vending machines.

There are many advantages to living on base for Single Sailors:

  • Safe
  • Secure
  • Close to work
  • Centrally located
  • Off Street parking
  • Utility bills included
  • Free laundry facilities
  • Vending / Recreational Area
  • Close to NEX, Commissary, Galley, Gym & Pool

In general, personnel in pay grades E1-E3 and E4 (with less than four years’ service) can expect to reside in shared quarters. Based on local conditions 50 to 75 percent of E4 with more than four years of service will be housed in private rooms.

UH are government-owned and managed housing. The only utilities you pay are cable TV, Internet and landline telephone – if you want them. In return, your Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) will stop.

Personnel assigned to Guantanamo Bay must reside in base housing; the local community is not an option since this is a ‘restricted’ base.
