Command Master Chief Ates was born in Urania, LA and raised in Joplin, MO. He enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1997, attended basic training, seaman apprenticeship training in Great Lakes, IL and striking as a rated Boatswain’s Mate during his first sea assignment.
His operational assignments include: Amphibious dock landing ship USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD-43) forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan from April 1998-April 2001; Spruance class destroyer USS DEYO (DD-989) home ported in Norfolk, VA from April 2001-February 2003; Individual Augmentee (IA) assigned to NAVESLG Forward, operating at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Clark, Khowst, Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM from February 2006-May 2007 and Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE THIRTY-THREE (NMCB 133), home ported in Gulfport, MS from September 2007-April 2013.
His shore assignments include; Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS), Professional Mariner schoolhouse Great Lakes, IL from March 2003-August 2007 and Navy Personnel Command (NPC), Millington, TN from July 2013-July 2016.
In February 2016, he was selected for the Command Senior Enlisted Leader program. He served as the Command Senior/Master Chief onboard the Avenger class mine countermeasure ship USS SENTRY (MCM-3) forward deployed to Manama, Bahrain from August 2016 - December 2017.
From January 2018 – April 2021, he served as the Command Master Chief of Strike Fighter Squadron TWO SEVEN (VFA-27) forward deployed to Iwakuni, Japan. As part of Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW-5), they embarked onboard the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) in support of Commander Task Force SEVEN ZERO (CTF-70) conducting Indo-Pacific operations.
He assumed duties as the Naval Support Activity Mid-South Command Master Chief in April 2021.
Command Master Chief Ates is a graduate of the United States Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 173, Gold) and Command Master Chief / Chief of the Boat (CMC/COB) course (class 161). He is qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (SW), Seabee Combat Warfare (SCW), Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (AW) and certified as a Master Training Specialist (MTS). His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
