Captain Alonza J Ross

Commanding Officer 

Captain Ross hails from Ashland, MS and entered the Navy in December 1982. 

After completion of Recruit and Seaman Apprenticeship training in Great Lakes, IL, he reported to his first command, USS Midway (CV-41), in Yokosuka, Japan serving onboard from February 1983 to May 1985 as a member of the Bos’n detail in Deck Department and was advanced to Boatswain Mate 3rd Class.  His next assignment was in USS Frank Cable (AS-40), in Charleston, SC from May 1985 until May 1987.  During this tour he was advanced to 2nd Class Petty Officer and was assigned as Third Division Leading Petty Officer, responsible for Boats and Cranes.

Captain Ross’ next assignment was as a Correction Specialist at Naval Brig Pearl Harbor, HI from July 1987 to May 1990 where he was advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class.  Heading back to sea, he was assigned as Deck Department Leading Petty Officer in USS Roanoke (AOR-7) in Long Beach, CA from June 1990 to June 1992.  Remaining at sea, his follow-on assignment was in USS Supply (AOE-6) in Norfolk, VA from July 1992 to October 1994 serving as Leading Chief Petty Officer and Division Officer for First Division.  It was during this tour that he was advanced to Chief Petty Officer and subsequently selected as a Deck Limited Duty Officer.  

Captain Ross was commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer (LDO) Ensign in October 1994. His first commissioned assignment was as Replenishment at Sea Equipment Officer in USS Artic (AOE-8) in Earle, NJ from November 1994 to May 1998.  His follow on tour was as First Lieutenant in USS Monongahela (AO-178) in Norfolk, VA from May 1998 until December 1999 when the ship was decommissioned.  After serving as the Training and Readiness Officer, COMPHIBGRU 1 Det, in Sasebo, Japan from January 2000 to October 2001, he returned to sea onboard USS Wasp (LHD-1) in Norfolk, VA serving as First Lieutenant from October 2001 to January 2004.  Remaining at sea, he served as First Lieutenant onboard the Navy’s newest Landing Platform Docking Ship, USS San Antonio (LPD-17), in Norfolk, VA from January 2004 to January 2006.  Reluctantly accepting shore duty orders, his next assignment was as Senior Deck Inspector on the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) Norfolk, VA from February 2006 to December 2008.  Remaining in Norfolk, VA for his final sea tour, he served as First Lieutenant in USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN69) from December 2008 until November 2010. His next assignment was Port Operations Program Director, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, in Norfolk, VA from November 2010 until September 2012.  

Follow on assignments were as Executive Officer, NAVSTA Newport, Newport RI from October 2012 until November 2014, Executive Officer, NAVSTA Guantanamo Bay Cuba from December 2014 until June 2016 and

Director of Enlisted Distribution (PERS-40), Navy Personal Command Millington, TN from July 2016 until Dec 2018. 

Captain Ross took command of Naval Support Activity Mid-South in February of 2019.

Captain Ross’ awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (5 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (7 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards), Good Conduct Medal (3 awards), and several unit commendations.  He was the recipient of the 2009 Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award.
