A native of Hartwell, Georgia, CDR Chastain enlisted in the US Navy in November of 1994 and completed recruit training at Great Lakes. He then reported to Orlando, Florida where he attended Electronics Technician “A” school and Naval Nuclear Power School.
After earning an appointment to the US Naval Academy, CDR Chastain transferred to the Naval Academy Preparatory School in January of 1996 where he completed the NAPS Fleet program. Graduating from the Academy in May of 2000, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and was commissioned an ensign in the US Navy.
Following his commission, CDR Chastain reported to Pensacola, Florida for primary flight training as a Red Knight of VT-3 and completed advanced flight training as an Eightballer of HT-8.
After earning his wings of gold on December 7th 2001, he transferred to Fleet Replacement Training at HSL-40 and ultimately reported to HSL-44 Swampfoxes flying the SH-60B. As a Swamp Fox, he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf aboard USS Cape St George in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
After completing his tour as a Swamp Fox, CDR Chastain transferred to NAS Pensacola for duty as an instructor where he earned numerous awards and flew more than 1,000 instructional hours in the T-6 Texan II. During his tour as a Wildcat of VT-10, he also earned an Executive Master’s of Business Administration through the Naval Postgraduate School.
In the spring of 2009, CDR Chastain transferred to San Diego, California for a disassociated sea tour aboard USS Peleliu as Miniboss. While attached to USS Peleliu, he deployed to the Arabian Sea in support of Fifth Fleet operations as well as Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief efforts in the wake of disastrous flooding in Pakistan.
In April of 2011, CDR Chastain returned to flying duty with the Warlords of HSL-51 as part of Forward Deployed Naval Forces, Japan. There he made numerous deployments as Officer in Charge of Detachment One, supporting Seventh Fleet Operations to include Humanitarian Aid Surveillance Team Operations in response to the devastating flooding in Thailand. He finished his FDNF tour as squadron Operations Officer whereby he reported to the Naval War College as a student of the College of Naval Command and Staff.
In the spring of 2015, CDR Chastain graduated from the Naval War College with a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies. From there, he subsequently transferred to Naval Air Station Sigonella fulfilling the duties as Deputy Operations Officer.
In October of 2018, he reported to Naval Air Station Fallon to serve as the Executive Officer for the installation.
During his career, CDR Chastain has accumulated over 3,200 flight hours. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit commendations and service medals.
