Commander Griffen a native of California where he enlisted in the Navy in 1987. After Basic Training in Great Lakes, IL, he attended Submarine School and Submarine Advanced Electronics Technician (ET) Pipeline in Groton, CT. Upon completion of training he reported to USS Houston (SSN 713) in San Diego, CA. His next assignment was instructor duty at Submarine Training Facility San Diego. He completed a tour at Deep Submergence Unit San Diego followed by a tour on USS Chicago (SSN 721) where he advanced to Chief Petty Officer in 1997. He completed his final enlisted tour at Navy Recruiting District Colorado.
In 2000 he commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer and reported to Operational Test Support Unit Two in Cape Canaveral, FL, as Operations Officer. In 2003 he commenced two tours on the submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) in Guam. His first position was R4 Electronics Division Officer in the Repair Department and his second tour was ship’s Operations Officer. In 2007, he served his third consecutive tour in Guam as Commander Submarine Squadron Fifteen’s Electronics Material Officer. In July 2010, he reported to Naval Ordnance Test Unit in Cape Canaveral, FL as Test Instrumentation Department Head. In February 2013 he reported to Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force in Norfolk, VA, as Section Head for Submarine C4I Systems. In July 2015, he reported to Commander, Submarine Force U.S. Pacific Fleet as TYCOM Combat Systems Maintenance and Modernization Officer. In 2017, he reported as Officer-In-Charge Trident Training Facility Learning Site Whidbey Island. In 2019 he reported as SWRMC Executive Officer before assuming his current position as Naval Base Point Loma Executive Officer.
His highest education level is a Master’s Degree in Management (Organizational Leadership).
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
