Captain Rich "Coyote" Wiley is a native of Greenfield, California and a 1987 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. He attended Aviation Officer Candidate School at NAS Pensacola, Florida and was commissioned an Ensign in November of 1990. In June 1992 he earned his wings as a Naval Flight Officer and received orders to the Golden Intruders of VA-128 at NAS Whidbey Island for training in the A-6E.
Upon completion of VA-128’s B/N syllabus, Captain Wiley joined the Knight Riders of VA-52 aboard the USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) and deployed to the Western Pacific in 1994. Following the disestablishment of VA-52 in 1995, he joined the Boomers of VA-165 aboard the USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) and deployed to the Western Pacific, Arabian Gulf, and South China Sea in 1995-96.
Selected for the NFO to Pilot transition program following the disestablishment of VA-165 and the decommissioning of the Intruder, Captain Wiley reentered the Navy’s Flight Program and received his wings as a Naval Aviator at NAS Kingsville in August 1998. He reported to the Greyhawks of VAW-120 at NAS Norfolk for training in the E-2C Hawkeye. Following FRS training, he joined the Black Eagles of VAW-113at NAS Pt Mugu and deployed aboard the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) to the Western Pacific, Arabian Gulf, and Indian Ocean in 2000-01. Following his E-2C tour, Captain Wiley was selected for transition to the C-2A Greyhound. He joined the Rawhides of VRC-40 in NAS Norfolk in December 2002 where he served as both Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer. He made two deployments, the first as Officer in Charge of Detachment Five attached to Carrier Air Wing EIGHT aboard the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) deploying to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea for the opening phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His second OIC tour was with Detachment One attached to Carrier Air Wing THREE aboard the USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN 75) where he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Eastern Atlantic in 2004. Following his tour with the Rawhides, he rejoined the Greyhawks of VAW-120 and served as Operations Officer of the VRC/VAW Fleet Replacement Squadron until October 2005.
In November 2005, Captain Wiley entered the United States Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island, where he graduated in November 2006 with a Masters of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. In October 2007, he reported to the “Providers” of VRC-30 at NAS North Island wherein February 2009 he became the 38th Commanding Officer of the Providers. Following Command, he reported to the USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) as the “Air Boss” where he completed two successive Western Pacific, North Arabian Sea, and Arabian Gulf Deployments. Following his Air Boss tour he joined the staff of Commander Strike Force Training Pacific where he served as the Current Operations Officer and the Syndicate Lead for TFCC and Air Defense. In 2012, Captain Wiley was selected for Major Command and in February 2014 he assumed Command of Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake where he currently serves.
During his career Captain Wiley has been awarded numerous personal, command and service commendations and he has accumulated over 3,400 flight hours and nearly 800 carrier arrestments in the A-6E, T-45A, E-2C, C-2A and F/A-18E/F aircraft.
