Paint Shop Disposal Area
IRP Site 32, the Paint Shop Disposal Area, is comprised of approximately one-half acre located in the eastern portion of Detachment Fallbrook, south of the Ammunition Road entrance gate in a developed portion of the base. Between the mid-1950s to 1983, a small above-ground storage tank with 50 gallons of caustic soda was used to loosen paint from various painting tools. Items were lowered into the tank, removed, and hosed off on an area next to the tank. Approximately every six months, the tank was drained down a hill through a 15- to 20-foot-long pipe. In 1977, a perforated seepage drum was installed at the pipe outfall, allowing solution to drain into the drum and then into the surrounding soil. A Site Inspection was completed in May 2010. Some metals concentrations exceeded screening values, however these levels may be naturally occurring in the Fallbrook area. An Extended Site Inspection currently being conducted.
