ASAN, Guam (July 12, 2019) – From July 15 through September, the Navy will upgrade and weekly test its mass warning and notification system, also known as the Giant Voice, at Joint Region Marianas, U.S. Naval Base Guam and Andersen Air Force Base.
The enhancements will improve the ability to provide timely emergent warnings to military personnel and their families, civilian employees, contractors and residents in surrounding areas.
Part of the upgrade includes System Operational Verification Testing, which verifies and validates that the Giant Voice equipment meets Navy and FEMA requirements.
During these testing periods, an announcement will be made that a test is being conducted, followed by various sounds emanating from Giant Voice speakers, specifically voice announcements, sirens, tones and static noises.
Residents in surrounding areas should not be alarmed if they hear increased activity associated with the testing. The mass notification loudspeaker system is safe and no protective actions are necessary during the brief system testing.
