NAS Patuxent River COVID-19 Information

Naval Air Station Patuxent River is tracking the COVID-19 pandemic and working with our tenants and Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) to keep our population safe. The following resources may be helpful to anyone looking for information on our operations here, and on COVID-19 in general.

Base services activity status

As Pax River continues to maintain mission readiness and public safety in response to COVID-19, we would like our personnel and residents to services have been impacted.


The Trusted Traveler Program at NAS Patuxent River is currently suspended; all personnel over the age of 16 must possess DoD credentials for base access.

Per NAVADMIN 114/20, which provides an update to temporary guidance for Navy personnel who require Common Access Card (CAC) and Uniformed Services Identification (USID) Card services during the COVID-19 emergency, service members are authorized access to DoD installations effective April 16, 2020 with an expired CAC or USID card through Sept. 30 2020. The expiration date of the CAC must be April 16, 2020 or later and for the USID card (issued to dependents, retirees, etc.) must be Jan. 1, 2020 or later. More information is available at

-         Effective May 1, Commissaries in the continental United States, including at NAS Patuxent River, will place shopping limits on fresh beef, poultry, and pork in response to anticipated shortages in the supply chain impacted by the closures of various U.S. beef/pork/poultry processing plants.

The shopping limits are as follows:

Fresh beef – two items

Fresh pork – two items

Fresh chicken – two items

Fresh turkey – two items

-         Effective April 17, Military members and dependents will be allowed exclusive access at the  Commissary for the first 60 minutes of normal operating hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Eligible patrons aged 60 years or older will be allowed exclusive access for the first 60 minutes of normal operating hours at the Commissary Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

-          Effective April 11, all those entering the Commissary are required to wear a cloth face covering or mask. Customers will be denied entry or required to leave if they are not wearing a face covering/mask.

-          Effective March 18, Pax River Commissary began 100% I.D. card checks at the entrance of the store and the visitor policy has been revoked until further notice. For more information, please call 301-342-3789/3630.

9-10 a.m. - Military and Dependents (Friday), Age 60 and above patrons (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

-        NEX Minimart
Effective April 5, the NEX Minimart will adjust its hours as follows:
Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

-        NEX Barbershop
The Pax River Navy Exchange Barbershop has reopened to Active Duty by appointment only.

Patrons must wear a face covering and use hand sanitizer prior to service, and will not be able to wait in the shop.

Temporary hours are:

• Sunday – closed

• Monday – closed

• Tuesday-Friday – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Saturday – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

-        Laundry/Dry Cleaning

The Laundry/Dry Cleaning operation will be closing Oct. 31, 2020. Customers will be able to drop off items until Oct. 14, 2020.  

-        Tailor Shop
The Tailor Shop will close today and will be limited to producing name tapes, and sewing on name tapes and insignia for newly purchased uniforms only.  Customers will still be able to pick up.


Open - Condition Level 2
Effective March 26, 2020, Naval District Washington (NDW) Navy Child and Youth Programs (CYP) will suspend care at all Child Development Centers for all patrons that are not designated as mission critical by their command. Commands will contact their designated personnel directly and may be required to provide Navy CYP with a designation letter to ensure only mission critical personnel receive care at this time. Those designated mission critical, but not currently registered with CYP, must register prior to scheduling or utilizing care.

-         Enhanced health screenings will occur, to include taking temperatures prior to admittance for care. Parents should continue to self-screen themselves and their children prior to arriving at the center.

-          All Hourly Childcare cancelled (unless emergency/ mission essential

-          All Youth Sports, Youth/Teen Programs, Field Trips away from Navy Childcare facilities cancelled

-          No New childcare enrollees into Navy operated programs (unless emergency/mission essential)

-          Parents are required to self-care for own children at home if Navy full-time telework agreement during COVID-19 pandemic is executed, parent fees will be waived/space saved

-          Parent fees will be waived/space saved for all personnel who elect to voluntarily temporary withdrawal their child for at least two weeks or until May 1, 2020.

Counseling for resilience, marriage or religious needs are available Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

-          No more than four visitors may be inside the VCC at any one time. All others shall wait outside until called. Visitors shall maintain 6 feet separation from each other, and will be no closer than an arms length to the counter at any time.

-          Visitors with symptoms of illness (fever, chills, cough, etc) are not allowed inside the VCC.

-          DBIDS cards for contractors will not be renewed until 14 days prior to their current card’s expiration date.

-          Issuance of DBIDS cards for dependents of DoN or DoD civilians is suspended until further notice.

The Building 409 CAC/ID Office is open with modified service, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:10 p.m., closed weekends. The Building 409 CAC/ID Office is currently only taking appointments for the following services:

-         Replacing lost or stolen CAC

-         Issuing initial CAC IDs

The Gate 1 CAC/ID Office is open Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. to 5:40 p.m., closed weekends. Services currently offered:

-          Replacing lost or stolen CAC

-          Issuing initial CAC IDs

-          Replacing IDs that will expire in the next 30 days (available to active duty without an appointment).

-          Seating is reduced and spaced for social distancing.

As of March 23, 2020 River's Edge and "We Proudly Serve" Starbucks in the Center Stage Theater will be closed until further notice.



Naval Health Clinic Patuxent River will temporarily suspend the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. extended hours beginning Monday, 6 April, 2020. Adjusted clinic hours for primary care will be from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Staff are available to conduct COVID-19 screenings Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Pharmacy hours remain unchanged.

NOTE: Masks with exhalation valves are NOT permitted. Valved masks are not appropriate for healthcare settings. Masks with valves allow unfiltered/contaminated air to be exhaled from the wearer – valves may be found on commercially marketed cloth masks, elevation training masks (ETMs), and some N95s.

The Naval Health Clinic Patuxent River (NHCPR) Pharmacy, located in the Navy Exchange on Cuddihy Rd., is still open and serving patients. There are many options for DoD patients to fill their prescriptions either
on base or anywhere else. During the time of the Coronavirus Pandemic our
operations will be changed as follows to minimize risk of virus spread:

1. If you choose to fill your medications at NHC Patuxent River (at
the Navy Exchange), you MUST request them before you come via one of the following options:

(1) Activate via our NHCPR App
(2) QR Code
(3) Navy Exchange Pharmacy Drop Box
(4) Call 301-757-2605.
****You must provide a cell or home phone number when placing your request.
You will be contacted when your prescriptions are ready. Only come to the
pharmacy AFTER you have received notification form the pharmacy that your prescription is ready. There are no co-pays for medications filled on base. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, all chairs have been removed and waiting in person is prohibited to minimize your risk and exposure to other
sick patients. Please assist us in minimizing traffic and supporting social

Family Advocacy Program (FAP), Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR), and Sailor Assistance and Intercept for Life (SAIL) will be responding to to phone calls and answering voicemails throughout the day. For more information on FFSC programs, please call 301-342-4911.

-          All NMCRS volunteer participation has been suspended through April 5, 2020.

-          NMCRS Patuxent River will see appointments only from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Please call 301-904-2956 to make an appointment for assistance.

Mask must be worn when not exercising and for entrance to facilities.

• No showers available.

• No drinking from water fountain. Bring own water. Bottle refill is available to be used only at fountains.

• No locker use.

• No towel service.

• No Volleyball.

• No Basketball.

• No Racquetball.

• No contact sports. Individual exercise only.

• Outside Exercise is available at both the turf fields. Trail/track are also available. ALL are eligible.

• Reservations are required and will be available for up to 3 days prior to exercise date. Reservation times are for the top of each hour.

*Clinic Physical Therapy spaces remain open to patients.
