NSA Bethesda Public Affairs Officer
In March, Naval Support Activity Bethesda faced a problem that many other U.S. military installations across the world faced, “How do we get the latest information about our response to our customers and employees?”
As the public affairs office, our job is to look at all of our channels (social media, website, email, etc.) and determine how we can reach the largest number of people.
When the pandemic first started, it came near the end of a recent effort by our team to update and reorganize our command website. That effort began because we recognized many of the people who work on and visit the installation may not see our content on Facebook, Twitter, or even by email.
The NSA Bethesda website is accessible to everyone with access to a browser and doesn’t require an account to view.
As the COVID-19 pandemic response ramped up, we created two pages - one on Facebook and one on our website - to consolidate updates about local operations.
The Facebook information was “pinned” to the top of our page, and we were able to get a shortened address for the website (https://cnic.navy.mil/COVID19Bethesda) to make it easier to find.
The amount of information grew to include nearly every eatery, vendor, and NSA Bethesda operation, creating an extensive list that needed to be updated several times a week.
By the time we were ready to reopen the Fitness Center, the level of information was too much to manage for one page on Facebook, so we moved everything to the website and used the Facebook note to point our followers there.
To help break up the information and make it easier to find, we created multiple pages dedicated to specific categories of information including updates on general operations, Fitness Center operations, and resources for COVID-19 updates beyond NSA Bethesda.
As the pandemic response continues, we are always reviewing how we can best present the information people need. We also welcome suggestions from users and customers.
If you haven’t had an opportunity to visit the page, you can find it here: https://cnic.navy.mil/COVID19Bethesda
